My Singa-baptimergent experience
Hey all,
I'm a grad student living in Missouri. I just got back from a trip home to Singapore for the summer. I was invited by a Methodist Church to give a talk on Postmodernism and the Emerging Church since I'm studying this from a sociological perspective.
It was really tough being in a spot where you are breaking in people to the idea of postmodernism, and also introducing them to the Emerging Church in the US. I had some tough questions to answer from some people who were turning rather hot-headed. And like I was joking with my friends, I came out of it feeling rather like a "false prophet".
I'm from a pretty conservative baptist tradition. My dad pastored and he also taught in a Baptist seminary. In my time back, I was only able to engage with a small group who were interested in what's going on with postmodernism... none of whom were baptists.
I'm not quite sure Singaporeans are ready for this discussion yet. Much less the Baptists back home. I'd really like to find more conversation partners from within our tradition, but it seems like a pretty tought task.
